Power dynamics and financial interests often eclipsed any genuine human connection.
CONFLICT MANAGEMENT, PEACE STUDIES | SONJA T.WOOD
We live in a Divided Society.
And Restoring Connection is my life’s work.
When I reflect on where this work truly began, I struggle to trace it back to a single origin—whether a fractured family or a dysfunctional professional environment, where power dynamics and financial interests often eclipsed any genuine human connection.
Although I formally became a Mediator in 2020, my journey in conflict management began much earlier…
I learned early what it meant to witness broken bonds within a family—to navigate emotional manipulation, psychological games, and, at times, the presence of violence.
For me, engaging with conflict did not begin in a mediation room. It began at home. And it began within.
War and peace are two sides of the same coin.
The Quiet Shift
War and peace are two sides of the same coin. I remember precisely the moment when, deep within myself, a single desire emerged: to feel at peace.
To be at peace within, and to live in peace with the world around me.
Conflict was exhausting, consuming, and slowly draining my vital energy. At the time, I did not yet understand that peace is not something you reach without effort. To hold peace at your fingertips, you must first be willing to face tension—conflict, division, and discomfort.
As I grew older, curiosity turned into fascination, and fascination into a deep commitment to understanding human behavior. That understanding became a powerful source of healing in my own journey, and a cornerstone in learning to meet my own flaws and perceived failures—and those of others—with greater compassion and clarity.
To hold peace at your fingertips, you must first be willing to face tension—conflict, division, and discomfort.
To hold peace at your fingertips, you must first be willing to face tension—conflict, division, and discomfort.
These dynamics are as old as humanity itself, and yet we continue to struggle—struggling to find peace within ourselves, and peace with one another.
Every Crisis holds an Opportunity for Transformation.
After more than a decade of studying and working in the chemical industry in Europe, I reached what I can only describe as a breaking point. A precise moment in time when enough was enough—when the body sensed the downward spiral long before the mind could fully name it.
In 2019, I enrolled in a 9-month program in Mediation and Conflict Management in Germany. Those nine months proved deeply transformative—something my peers reflected back to me long before I could fully see it myself.
As I continued along the mediation path, my curiosity deepened. I became increasingly drawn to a fundamental question: What is peace, really? And to explore peace, I had to be willing to look directly at its counterparts—war, conflict, fracture, and division.
These dynamics are as old as humanity itself, and yet we continue to struggle—struggling to find peace within ourselves, and peace with one another.
So many questions remain unanswered. Why were some countries able to restore peace after WWII, while others still struggle to find stability today? What makes these situations fundamentally different? Why do some populations remain trapped in cycles of conflict, unable to let go? What could be done differently? Among all possible outcomes, which paths might prevent violence rather than fuel it? And how can we respond to violence in ways that are truly sustainable? Is violence an inherent part of human nature, making it inevitable?
These are the questions I continue to explore—not in search of definitive answers, but in pursuit of deeper understanding—hoping to uncover insights and, perhaps, systems that can be applied to conflictual situations within my lifetime. When we look closely, we see that these questions apply at every level of conflict, from domestic mediation to international negotiations.
Conflict management and peace studies are not simply my profession. They are my life’s work.
